Sanctuary
We believe that every animal has the right to a happy and healthy life, free of fear and neglect.
We provide permanent sanctuary care to more than 100 residents daily, the majority of whom are unlikely to be rehomed due to their challenging veterinary needs, sympathetic handling requirements or behavioural difficulties, which are a result of the neglect they have suffered.
Our Sanctuary's aim is to ensure that every resident – no matter how complex their needs – has the opportunity to live out their days in a loving and safe environment.
The dogs, cats, chickens and equines who call Crosskennan their permanent home have the opportunity to have normal lives, whether it be with the horses, ponies and donkeys living within natural herds, encouraging them to exhibit their natural behaviour and make friends, or the dogs and cats who live within their own family groups and share home spaces, complete with the common furnishing of any home.
To meet the needs of the large variety of residents requires a dedicated care team. It also requires a very high level of veterinary care and we work with a large mix veterinary teams who provide support, as well as enabling us to advise the wider horse community in caring for their own animals; with over 7000 animals through our gate since inception in 1996 there aren't many ailments or conditions we haven't seen but we are always ready to learn more each day.
