As we continue celebrating Volunteers’ Week 2025, we’re sharing more stories from the incredible people who give their time, energy, and love to the sanctuary.
Today, we’re honoured to share the words of Laura, who came to Crosskennan later in life after years of putting others first. Her story is a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to follow your heart — and that sometimes, when we show up for animals, they rescue us right back.
🌟 Here’s Laura’s story, in her own words:
“What first brought me to Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary?
For as long as I can remember I have always loved animals, always wanted to be with animals and have plenty of animals around me. As the first in my family to graduate, I went along with what I thought others would want me to do with my life — something I always regretted — and my dream of working with animals was pushed to the side.
As I got older and took care of my mum until she passed away from cancer, I decided that once and for all I would do something for myself — and hopefully help some four-legged friends along the way.
I stumbled across Crosskennan Lane while in work one day and noticed a call for volunteers from the founder, Lynn. I emailed and arranged to visit the next week with the junior volunteers (not easy when you are 40!) But from the moment I arrived, I instantly felt I was where I was supposed to be.
The people, the animals — even the very feel of the Sanctuary — made me realise I had made the right decision. I now attend once a week and I can honestly say it’s the happiest I have ever been. The only negative is I want to be there all day, every day!
Thank you, Crosskennan, for rescuing me.”
💚 Laura, we’re so grateful that your path brought you here — and we’re proud to walk beside you.
👀 Stay Tuned…
We’ll be sharing more volunteer stories all week across our website and social media channels. Each one offers a different glimpse into life at the sanctuary — and into the hearts of those who make it all possible.
